MAUMEE BAY BREWING CO. is a tourist destination for many reasons. There’s the beer, of course. The brewpub, located in downtown Toledo, serves tasty beers such as Total Eclipse Breakfast Stout and Amarillo Brillo, an imperial India pale ale.

The facility itself is a pretty decent attraction, too. The brewpub and its 15-barrel system—there’s also a larger 30-barrel production brewery located across the street—are housed in the historic Oliver House, a former hotel constructed in 1859 by Major William Oliver.

The massive brick complex, which sits along the Maumee River and is on the National Register of Historic Places, contains not only the brewpub but also a small café, a theater, an upscale steakhouse, a college beer bar, and even townhouses. And ghosts.

The hotel was used as an infirmary during the Spanish-American War, and workers believe the friendly ghosts—yes, they are cordial—are still hanging around from that time. One of the apparitions, known as “The Captain,” appears in a soldier’s uniform.

While the beer, historic building, and chance encounters with the otherworldly guests are reasons enough to visit, what makes the brewery a one-of-a-kind destination in Ohio is its function as an unofficial Toledo beer museum. People can spend hours looking through the estimated 5,000 to 6,000 beer-related items on display, ranging from crowns to signs. Owners James and Patricia Appold have packed the Oliver House with a seemingly endless supply of breweriana. Not familiar with the term? It’s used to describe all sorts of beer collectibles.
